A Spry’s Purebred Shorthorn Heifer won Reserve Grand Champion Carcass at the 2008 Royal Geelong Show Beef Carcass Competition against 72 entries! She was beaten by ¼ of a point for Grand Champion Carcass.
A heifer, bred by Spry’s Shorthorns and sired by Rockdell Pride scored 87 points to be Heavy Weight Champion (Yearling). The 19 month old (grass reared) milk tooth heifer weighed 548kg live and dressed 330kg (HSCW) – dressing an incredible 60%! Miss Pride had 10mm fat on the P8 and 6mm on the Rump, an EMA of 93 square cm and an Ausmeat Marble score of 1.6 (MSA Marble score 420).
The competition was held at Herds works, Geelong and all cattle were purchased by herds’ for the Domestic Market. The carcass judging system was Australian Beef Carcase Appraisal (ABCAS) which incorporates MSA. The heifer came back with a carcass value of $1115.
Also of note, was the 3rd place winner in the heavy Weight Section- a Hereford cross Shorthorn and the first three placegetters in the Heavy yearling Section were British or British Cross.
